I walked from West Horndon to Basildon.
I feel mean giving 3* because some of this route was a stunning 4.5* but there was a lot of 2* road walking also.
A short walk though West Horndon (what a friendly village, 7 'good mornings' in 7 minutes) takes you to a narrow path that quickly opens out across open fields for a few km. Across a narrow bridge and through a farm/fishery the path turns into a track taking you to Fen Lane. This has a wide verge all the way to Bulphan (village shop). There are then 3 roads in a row without verge or pavement , no lighting, I would not walk these after dark. Doesgate Lane has good visibility and is relatively quiet, cars gave me a wide berth, views across the fields. Lower Dunton Lane is busier and more uncomfortable but short. Old Church Hill is very narrow but very quiet and goes up hill to a path though woods to open fields beside Hall Wood. What a view of London from here, 35km away! Another road B1007 takes you to Marks Hill Nature Reserve, a beautiful woodland with steep uneven paths. Reaching the B1036 I could not find the parallel path through the woods as mapped so took the cycle path which is set back from the road (red line on map). From there it is suburban pavement walking to Basildon Station, which they have hidden under a bridge.
A mixed walk, enjoyable overall, lovely in parts but lots of roads. Beautiful countryside views. Not for wheels.

Do you think it's worth having a more off road route for WesBas? I recently redid StaBas and found some permissive paths in the Basildon half which could shorten a new route and partly balance any extra distance.

That would seem a good idea. Can you post it up?

Hi Strider. Don't get notifications for replies to replies!
There were lots of options. I might walk it tomorrow but for what it's worth I'll probably go for the shortest one. Although I think it might be less interesting. I'll add a temporary review you can reply to for the notifications :)

I tried a new Wes Bas route. The first half had some terrible parts, but at least can be ruled out. The second half was great, seemed better to me than WesBas 1. Posted it up anyway with details if you fancy going back to West Horndon and trying it out. I should just have walked WesBas 1! I'll leave the links above which don't use it.
