Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

23 Jul 2023 Summer

Today (a warm, showery summer day) I ran the first part of the route (from Wendover to Pavis Wood, but then kept following the Ridgeway and got back to Tring by descending Marlin Hill - my ears nearly popped it was so steep) and last year I walked the part from Pavis Wood to Tring, also in showery weather. So I have done the whole Wentri One route, just not in one go! This route avoids big roads, with just the part along Hale Lane being on a (not very busy) road. Lots of beech woodland on chalk, parts will be very muddy in wet winter conditions. The bridleway from The Hale to Chivery goes up a quite impressive hollow way, the first part has recently been surfaced with chunky gravel which will probably help when it gets wet. None of the route is particularly steep: either way you do it, its a gradual climb, a flat bit, followed by a gradual descent. As it involves public footpaths and kissing gates (but no stiles) its an on-foot-only route, no riding. [Note: The tarmac of Hale Lane can be avoided by taking the (much longer) Ridgeway national trail route on the bridleway through Hale Wood and Barn Wood. This adds another km or so to this route.].

01 Nov 2022 Autumn

I walked this on a warm Saturday autumn afternoon, from Tring to Wendover.

I had walked Wentri two before, and was interested to see whether this one was better. I think I prefer Wentri two a little. Mostly because this one had me go around a field full of cows (I really really don't like going through fields with cows).

The route starts at Tring and heads towards Tring park, where from there on the section consists of half going up the hill, and then half going down into Wendover. It's not a small hill, but it's all through woods on the way up. The walk is mostly through a succession of woods, with a small section of the Ridgeway currently not being accessible due to surface works. It's easy to get around, so there is no reason to mark it as an access issue here. After leaving that section, there is a fairly long slog down the narrowish Hale Lane, but luckily with little traffic. It was neither unsafe, or too annoying. The colours in the trees made well up for it. At the end in Wendover you go through a lovely park along Heron Brook. The High Street had lots of cafes.

I walked this route from Tring to Wendover. I thought it was really great countryside walking. Some wide open fields, some steep up- and downhill segments, and a good amount of walking through forest land, with a few just fantastic views of the surroundings. Wendover is also a really lovely place to rest and get something to eat.

Oops! I accidentally walked Wentri two instead of this route! I don't see a way to delete reviews, so please note I didn't walk this route and so can't vouch for its quality!
