01 Sep 2024 Summer

I walked this on a warm day, from Wembley to Brent Cross.

The first section along Wembley was not so pleasant in the heat. Almost no trees. I didn't quite do the loop around the stadium, but instead followed the Wembley Park Boulevard. The section along Welsh Harp was nice, with nature and some trees to provide some shade. The third third was along hot residential roads again, with little shade. An improvement could be crossing the rail way at Renters Lane, instead of going around the roundabout(s) just north of the North Circular. That was probably my least favourite (and least safe) section. As it was a Sunday, the mapped route to the station doesn't work, and you need to go around the block to get to the (south) main exit. I didn't spot any water points either.

The route is pleasant. I would take boots or some high-durability shoes in the winter or if it has been raining. I would also plan to complete this route during daylight as a large section of the walk is unlit. The route has nice views and takes you away from the busy streets of the places it connects.

A really varied walk, taking in Wembley Central, the stadium, and big sections of the Welsh Harp. As a Sheffield Wednesday fan at trip to Wembley normally involves disappointment; not this time though. Coldplay were playing the Stadium so it was a bit more crowded than usual.

The route is either paved or in the Welsh Harp section, compressed dirt and gravel. While there are minor inclines throughout the route, the steepest point is the pedestrian crossing over the A406 close to Brent Cross station.

A few points on the route:
- Events at Wembley Stadium will determine how close you can follow the path around the stadium. I couldn't get close as I had a backpack and there was an event on, meaning I had to take a wider circle around the stadium to get to Wembley Way; not a big deal though.
- Lighting around the overpass (Brent Cross Flyover/A406) was non-existent at one point, and walking just past sunset felt slightly risky. It's a short section (30m?) but even so. The route also involves an underpass under Watford Way, but this is well lit.
- The entrance to Brent Cross station the route suggests is closed after 8 pm and all day on Sunday, therefore I had to take a slightly longer route to the main entrance. Again, not a big deal, but the main the entrance should probably be the 'mapped to' route instead of the current side entrance.

All in all, pretty decent for a city walk!.

I walked this route from Wembley to Brent Cross.

Pros:
- Wembley Stadium up close is quite cool, and the plaza behind it is nice with lots of shops. There was an event happening the afternoon after I walked through (in the morning) and there was a lot of security around but I didn’t have any trouble getting through and wasn’t stopped.
- The Welsh Harp Nature Reserve is lovely!
- There’s a stretch following the Capital Ring, which is exciting

Cons:
- While all roads have pavements and safe crossings, the first roads north of Wembley stadium are just big and loud and car dominated, which isn’t super pleasant. Same goes for the Brent Cross end.
- the navigation is a bit tricky around Brent Cross, as the underpasses/overpasses to get around big roads aren’t always intuitively located. They’re all there and you can get through, but I found myself turning to Google Maps instead of using the GPX file and the OSMaps basemap to get a bit more detail.
- it felt a bit annoying to go the long way around Wembley Stadium, as I imagine you can go to its west side.
- the side entrance to the Brent cross station that this route has you take wasn’t open when I walked the route on a Sunday, but you can get to the station from Highfield Avenue no problem.

Overall, a good route, but probably not my favorite in London, even with a really fantastic natural middle section!.

Accessible urban walking at its best. I walked from Brent Cross to Wembley, good for wheels all the way. A mix of roads with reasonable views. Ink caps in cracks, buddleia in brickwork, grey wagtails over water. Seven dozen types of street tree to see. A racket of ring neck parakeets. Strutting starlings underfoot. All from the pavement.
Then there's the Welsh Harp Reservoir Nature reserve with plenty of wild life also, take binoculars if you have them, take a picnic. There is a grit path all through the reserve but it is unlit.
Lots of shops from tiny independents to retail outlets. Wembley Stadium is impressive. I took the quiet route as mapped behind the stadium, but you can also go the other way past shops and cafes.
Trains and busses all along the route means that if the weather turns or you're tired you can tap out any time.
