Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A simple walk, the biggest hazard was cars reversing out of driveways on the Wednesbury Road. Once you reach the junction of Wallows Lane and Bescot Road it is more or less a straight road into Wednesbury.

Just to point out, when passing under the M6 at Junction 9, there is a small downward ramp on your left which takes you under the M6 and brings you out the other side, this is easier and safer than crossing the road.

We walked the route in January on a very cold day. It is very easy to follow and safe route as there is an underpass by the entrance to and exit from the motorway and easily accessible crossings on all the main roads. The beginning of the route along the side streets out of Wednesbury and the end of the route along the canal into Walsall are the most pleasant parts with the middle section crossing the motorway being very busy and noisy. There may be a quieter route avoiding this section via Bescot but it would increase the distance considerably. So overall a good route and with plenty of places to get refreshments and food at both ends.

I started this Slow Way from Walsall at 10am on a freezing morning! Having left the main shopping street, past the New Art Gallery you join the Walsall Canal. There are eateries and new flats at the very beginning but this isn't for very far. Canada Geese, Ducks and Coots love it here in the clear water where there are no water craft. The walk along the towpath is well used and not unfriendly. The other side of the canal soon gives way to small industrial businesses. As you reach a Sikh temple, you leave the canal and follow the main road. This by no means a pleasant section of the walk, but it is safe as there crossing throughout. Crossing under the M6 seems daunting until you realise that there is an open footway under it and crossing is simple. Arrival in Wednesbury doesn't change much until you leave the main road to join a side road. A residential area dotted with pubs, your reward for the gentle ascent is when you get beside the churchyard of St Bartholemews, one of the highest points around. The walk to the meeting point in Wednesbury is short and involves pavements and a pedestrian crossing before rounding the corner to the Bus Station. This is a direct and safe route that makes the best of the interesting spots along the way. Offroad where it can be. A welcome addition to the network.
