17 Feb 2022 Winter

I walked from Watford to Radlett, generally a good route. Up to the A41/M1 the route follows the Colne Valley Cycle Route, which is reasonably clear. At this point, knowing that there is no footpath where the route currently suggests crossing the A41/M1, I diverted down Berrygrove Lane and then Otterspool Lane, then turning right up the bridleway to meet the route as shown at the footpath. This was a fairly easy diversion. Once I rejoined the route I found it pleasant and easy-to-follow, with a few muddy spots where I was glad for my boots.
Apart from the diversion, a couple of downsides: Crossing Radlett Road near Aldenham - it's a busy road and there is no defined crossing point (although there is pretty good visibility when crossing). Also, the route goes down two sides of a triangle in Letchmore Heath, which could be shortened by using Common Lane.
Overall though, an enjoyable morning's walk.

I walked from Watford to Radlett.
There is a detour; you cannot cross the A41 and M1 where indicated, you need to walk to the roundabout to cross the A41 then under the M1 before doubling back to the marked route (see map photo).
This walk starts along the Colne River, good tarmac paths. From then on it is roads or fields. Some roads have pavements and are quite busy, some quieter but without pavements. The fields are muddy and contain crops and animals. The highlight for me was Berrygrove ancient woods which the detour goes through.
This was a reasonable walk, but I think with some local knowledge a better route might be made.

If you are going via the A41 roundabout it would be shorter to turn right after the motorway to get to Patchetts Green. Also at the Radlett end there are footpaths from the old brickworks into the town to avoid walking alongside the 50 mph main road. The gpx plot is not too accurate in places.
