25 Oct 2024 Autumn

I walked from Radlett to Watford.
Good walk. From Radlett Station through suburban roads, cut throughs and parks into countryside (look for the puddingstone). Nice fields with views. Then on to Prachett Green (puddingstone!) with a pub. Some narrow lanes with no verge, but also little traffic.
Placid ponies in a field. I would have walked through Knutsford Park rather than along the road, a lot nicer. Then along the Colne into Watford with hardly a road. Past a retail park to High Street Station.
Some unnecessary road walking but overall a good route between these places.
Not for wheels.

I enjoyed this walk from Radlett. In spite of threats of rain and flooding the paths were largely dry. I didn't find any difficulties with the route. The horses at Pagmire Lane were docile enough and not at all inquisitive. Food shops and cafes in Radlett and large Tesco near the end in Watford. To continue to Northwood (Norwat 2) you can follow the Cycle Route 6 (passing Tesco and into Oxhey Park where there's the Tasty Bean Café with toilets) and onto the Ebury Way.

22 Sep 2024 Autumn

I walked this on a warm and mostly sunny day, from Radlett to Watford. There was a little rain in the previous night.

After negotiating the crossings away from Radlett station, an urban footpath (photo #1) soon brings you along a residential road (photo #2) where at the top, a footpath then leads you around a playing ground — I think you could shortcut through "The Dell and "The Pathway" (photo #3) to save some time. After Loom Place, another footpaths brings you on top of the hills with nice paths next to fields (photo #4).

The short section along Common Lane and Grange Lane was a little unpleasant due to traffic, but it wasn't unsafe IMO (photo #5). A muddy path (photo #6) brings you onto Summerhouse Lane where the route goes through a field with horses. You can easily detour (like I did) along Summerhouse Lane until you reach the bridleway. Pegmire Lane had no traffic at all. A metalled path (photo #7) then brings you along the M1 with noise, and after going along the caravan park (photo #8) you end up on the most unpleasant, but not unsafe Hartspring Roundabout (photo #9). With some detours to safe crossing points (as mapped) you then continue past an industrial estate for a while (photo #10).

At the top end, just before Stephenson Way, a lovely path down a hill (photo #12) gets you to Bushey Mill Lane, with a good pavement walk (photo #12). Radlett Road has traffic, but also a separated footpath (or rather, cycle path) (photo #13). After crossing underneath Colonial Way (photo #14), the route follows the pleasant Colne Valley path, nearly all the way to the Waterfields Shopping Park, where some paths then bring you to the finish at Watford High Street station.
