Description

Takes the shortest route I know out of Abingdon towards Wantage, with a nice shady wander along the River Ock (Ock Valley Walk, entrance near St Helens Church). The walk quickly enters fields, either on footpaths or bridleways, with a noisy bit as you walk along the A34 for a short distance. Once over the A34, then it's walk on through the fields. Plenty of chirpy birds, and if lucky, you'll see a few red kites or a deer or two.

Across the Steventon/Henney Road, and more fields following the route of the old canal (though you can't really see it). A farm track will take you under the train lines, and then up towards Ardington (pub, village shop). The Icknield Way then goes towards Wantage, with more pubs and shops along the way until you're at the square.

I've walked this is all seasons, and can get a little slippy under foot, but still firm and not boggy (unless a tractor has churned things up).

Unsuitable for wheelchairs. Perfectly good for an off-road bike (where permitted)

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.
  2. Submit a survey for this route.
