08 Jul 2023I walked from Wantage to Abingdon. The route heads eastward out of Wantage, running roughly parallel to the Reading Road, before turning northeast towards Steventon and then northward to Abingdon. North of the Drayton Road it overlaps with Abidid two. I wouldn't recommend it for wheels - the path can be narrow, there are a few stiles, and the footbridge over the A34 requires the use of stairs and no nearby alternative.
Because the section out of Wantage is essentially halfway up the hills that form the Ridgeway, you get some nice views.
The actual terrain varies - short sections on roads, in particular near the two ends, with a mixture of footpaths and bridleways. The cobbled path through Steventon is shaded, which was quite welcome on the hot day I chose to walk the route.
Milton and Steventon both have pubs, as do the two ends, which are reasonably served by public transport.
Fans of the James Bond film 'Skyfall' may like the lookalike gates near Steventon Church - see picture.

23 Apr 2021This is part of a longer 27 mile route, The Vale Way, from Abingdon to Longcot. It is marked on OS maps. Reasonably easy to follow with little stickers on the standard council waymarks and fingerposts. A variety of surfaces from tarmac and gravel to grass, field edge and a couple of cross-field paths that may be ploughed or cropped but are usually reinstated.
