Hiking Historian

24 May 2023 Spring

Slightly amended from the original route to correct inaccuracies and odd route-finding.

From Walton (good transport links and many nearby shops), we cut under the flyover and soon enter Walton Hall Park. Good tarmacced paths lead us through the park, until we take a junction over a road where we then access the old railway, which is now mostly the Transpennine Trail.

It is mostly tarmac all the way, but there are a few places where wheelchairs cannot pass: there are a couple of very narrow barriers, and some subsidence in the path.

At Aintree Racecourse, the footpath becomes earth and stone in a wooded area, often narrow in places, before joining the canal. Along a grassy bank, we then cross the bridge and access the towpath.

After the motorway bridge, we exit the canal via a narrow passageway, and follow the paved road walk through the residential streets of Kirkby, passing the station along the way.

A pleasant green walk through parks, along the old railway and canal, but a few obstacles and terrain makes it foot-only.

Strider

11 Dec 2022 Autumn

I walked from Walton to Kirkby on a wet, frosty day.
Starting at St Mary's church Walton, round the corner to the crossing under Queens Drive flyover down a residential road to Walton Hall park. Wide kissing gates are no barrier and there is a paved walk through the park. Just before the Exit onto the road there is a left turn towards a cycle path - Liverpool Loop Line, again a well made tarmac path. The path passes under several bridges with greenery either side. One bridge is a long dark tunnel, this is fine in the day, but there is no lighting for most of the route and may not be uncomfortable after dark. A right turn takes you from a cutting to an embankment where the Loop continues to Signal Works Woodland. A dog-leg turn gives a choice of paths, you want the middle one. The left right next to Aintree racecourse is a dead end, the right hand (and better path) takes you to Aintree Lane south of a swing bridge, which you may like to do. The middle path through the woods next to the fence takes you to the canal and directly to the swing bridge. This section is the only part where there is not a tarmac/paved path.
Crossing the road at the swing bridge the path continues along the Liverpool to Leeds canal until a left turn before a bridge (the steepest part at 12%) the right onto the road, suburban road to Kirkby station (cat + coffee!), then a wide pavement to Kirkby Bus Station and shopping precinct.
Well made paths all the way apart from a short bit past Aintree racecourse.
A lovely green corridor through an urban area with lots to see, more nature in summer I think, but a little slippery on this icy day.
