Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

24 May 2023 Spring

As most routes use the old railway, and certain obstacles exclude wheelchair users, I decided to try a route that bypasses these and hopefully would by accessible to all. And, for the most part, it succeeds, but not perfectly.

Starting, as with the others, with a walk through Walton Hall Park and then gaining access to the old railway, we exit soon after. A footpath brings us onto a road on an industrial estate. This section is the only one which may be of concern: there aren't many ramps and the kerbs are quite high, but it is mostly a quiet road until we get to the end, past Taskers.

Using a road crossing, we next enter Everton Cemetery (open dawn 'til dusk). Good tarmac tracks bring us through to the road past HMP Altcourse, where, after a short unpaved (but closed to traffic) road walk, we cross the road (unfortunately no ramp) and join the pavement, before turning onto a footpath.

The footpath, tarmac and earth, can be muddy or wet in places, and runs through an area of scrub near the prison. At the end, a road crossing and onto another tarmac footpath, running behind houses.

A short walk down a residential street brings us to the A506, which has a good footpath and pavement alongside it, which brings us to the shops and bus station at Kirkby.

A couple of kerbs and a footpath that may be too wet or muddy for wheelchairs are the only obstacles for wheeled users, but this is a good, an alternative, direct route for travellers from Walton to Kirkby.
