Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Jan 2022Unfortunately this route is almost all on roads, except for two sections. The first, short section through Epping Forest is difficult to navigate with no obvious path taking the route shown, and for much of the year is very very muddy - wellies or similar boots are essential. There is a second longer section of off-road up the Roding Valley which is comparatively easy and a better path, but there's no escaping the fact that you're next to the M11 motorway. The final long stretch through Chigwell is on busy main roads. Overall I wouldn't particularly recommend this route. Although I haven't surveyed alternatives I would think it is possible to take a better route along back roads and possibly (in dryer weather or if you don't mind mud) making more use of Epping Forest.

29 Jan 2024Hello Rose. I read your review of WalChi 1 and decided to design a new route as you suggested, maybe you'd like to test it? It sticks to well used paths in Epping Forest, although I tried it out recently and certainly can't promise less mud. It also includes Claybury Park and approaches Chigwell from Grange Hill, the quietest approach into Chigwell I'm aware off. The road walking is quieter in general. There is still a section in Roding Valley Park by the M11 but it is shorter. Hopefully there will be more to see from the riverbank than the bike route and it will distract from the noise.
