Description

This fixes the *very* vaguely drawn route line of WadRob 1, incorporates Victoria’s suggestion to avoid A-road verge walking (see WadRob 1’s review) and includes the chance of a mid route stop in Burwash which has a decent selection of places to eat or buy food and is on the 231 bus route, 6/d e/w.

WadRob 1 is just a rough outline that needs a good deal of interpretation plus a good map. This version has a similar level of detail to other Slow Ways routes. But there may be small inaccuracies where I had to draw bits by eye, many of the paths round here haven't yet been uploaded to the OSM base maps which normally help to keep things very tight. That would also make the interpretation of WadRob 1 very difficult if you were navigating using a Slow Ways website print out, or the Slow Ways app or any other nav. app or site based on OSM base maps, which are common!

The vagueness of WadRob 1 also makes it appear far too short. In reality it's only 500m shorter than this route, not 3km shorter as displayed!

ETA Think twice walking this after a wet month like Dec '24. I tried walking this recently (3 Jan '25). Very beautiful but beyond muddy all over, sometimes heavy frost was on my side but several fields were just saturated and torturous to cross, including a hillside! Local lady did say it was exceptional (met at bus stop, had to end early at Burwash, lovely pub though!)
Also beware 2 excessively heavy kissing gates near Wadhurst

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 Feb 2025 Winter

Walked in two parts. In Jan 2025 I walked from Wadhurst to Burwash. Then today, Feb 1st, I walked from Robertsbridge to Burwash and decided to keep going in the hope of finding my lost and loved fingerless mitten, but without success. This is a beautiful area and it's very convenient to stop in Burwash, a pretty village with a cafe, shop, two pubs, buses to the nearest station and an array of benches with great views by both the church and the playing field. And there's Stonegate Station on the route a few miles further north.

But... it's a tricky route for winter as the clay soil is often saturated and/or very muddy. This affects the places you would expect: constrained woodland paths, floodplain grazing, around some stiles and gates (especially when farmers put troughs or feeding stations right next to them!). The ground was particularly saturated on the first walk, which made crossing some fields tiring but a hard frost helped with a lot of the mud. And conversely the ground was less sodden but still very wet but the mud stickier on the return trip. There are several level crossings, some gates are deliberately very heavy and there are stiles, roots and various footbridges.

I am wondering if there is a better route for wet weather but I think you would have to miss out Stonegate Station. I tried a slight variation through Buttons instead of via Churchsettle Farm on the reverse walk it was a nice valley, and little gradient and largely tarmacked access lanes but I preferred the hillier footpaths of this route.

The actual paths, stiles, gates and bridges are not always quite where the mapped rights of way are. I'm going to check my gpx tracks against the route and see whether it's worth uploading a tweaked version.

Photos are mostly in approximate reverse order from the Feb 1st walk so cover little of the Wadhurst end.

PS Wadhurst village and station are a long way apart. But be careful with buses as they might arrive very early and drive past you while you are looking for something in your bag instead of waiting with your hand out! For these routes the bus tracking apps and websites should not be trusted either.
