There is another route - Uddham two which starts and finishes at the same locations, it is shorter by nearly two miles however is more urban in the southern stretches.
The Uddham routes starts at the Green opposite the Tunnock’s Bakery in Uddingston. This could be forever be known as the ‘Tunnock’s Trail’. If you fancy a treat the Tunnock’s Tea Rooms is just about 75 metres north of the junction. It is open from 0730 to 1600 Tuesday to Saturday (Sept 2022). Crossing the junction to Bellshill Road gets you underway. A short stretch of suburban Old Glasgow Road will take you to the footpath near the River Clyde.
Follow the track as it meanders along in the forest. There are some enchanting views across the River, before you get to Bothwell Castle which is undergoing extensive restoration and is closed to visitors (Sept 2022). As you make your way past the New Red Sandstone Cliffs deposited in the Permian Geological Period, which were used to build Bothwell Castle along with much of Glasgow’s older buildings, see if you can spot the new & old ‘graffiti’!
Keep to the upper path until you exit the woods and make your way to rejoin Main Street. Once past the church you will turn eastwards onto Green Street.
If you want to avoid a flight of 10 steps down, continue south along the Uddingston Road until you reach Langside Road which takes you downhill to the Wraith Interchange - the same place Green Street would have taken you.
Raith Interchange is an expedition in itself, follow the signs for Strathclyde Country Park. Once over the bridges, the route continues along the western side of the manmade Strathclyde Loch. Before you get to the Water Sports Centre, take the bridge over the Clyde and head towards the Mausoleum. As you pass the Golf Driving Range, you can choose to make a small detour to the Low Parks
Museum on Mote Hill/Muir Street for a unique Tunnock’s surprise! The end of the route is at Hamilton West Railway Station which has good access for all forms of transport.
