Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

22 Feb 2023 Winter

Walked the route on a Wednesday afternoon/evening in February from Truro to Probus. This is very much a walk of two halves making it difficult to rate but unfortunately on balance I can’t recommend this route due to safety concerns about the first half which is a particular shame as the second half between Tresillian and Probus is excellent. However it’s the section of St Clements Hill between Penair Secondary School and the A390 which I feel is unsafe. Though it is designated a ‘quite lane’ it’s national speed limit and cars travel at significant speeds. There are no pavements and a number of tight blind bends with no verge to allow you to escape the road. There is also a tight single lane tunnel where a car would not be able to pass a pedestrian safely. This was my assessment in good clear conditions and so the situation would only worsen in poor weather or darkness. If it was the only realistic route then perhaps it could be justified but I think following the A390 itself though less scenic would be much safer and only slightly less direct whilst taking Trennick Lane and the bridleway out to St Clement may present another potentially more scenic though longer option. I will look to plot both these alternatives whilst retaining the same second half to allow them to be considered alongside this route as realise others may be less concerned by the road safety aspects than I am in preference of the directness of this option.

I walked this route from Probus, a handsome spacious village where I was welcomed at the Hawkins Arms with a full glass and the opportunity to charge my phone. The Truro end in particular is functional with a lot of road walking that was not ideal but I had no problems even at a busy morning school/work run time of day high vis is good practice anyway.

I did not stop in Tresillian but I have heard The Wheel Inn is a good pub.

The Probus end has some lovely sweeping paths lifting you up for panoramas and plunging you back into woodland, these can be steep and rocky in places. It is an enjoyable and really quite direct route.

I walked this route in reverse, starting in Probus.

This is a very good slow way. I can confirm that the whole route was easy to follow on the ground and there were no issues with navigation. It felt like the majority of the walk was alongside/on roads, but there is still a good chunk of off road route too. From what I can see there are no great alternatives to the roads. Probus is a charming village, and I soon found myself deep into the countryside, travelling through beautiful woodland west of Tregurno, before emerging in Tresillian, roughly half way through the slow way. Tresillian has some ammenities, and is a good place for a rest alongside the creek if required. There are pavements along the A390 until the turn off to the lane that takes you up to Penair school. A gradual ascent to the top of Truro, and then a final steep descent brings you out at the town centre.

A couple of points to note:

- It is not clear that the long driveway to Lamellyn from Probus is a public right of way - signs seems to be absent. Do perservere though as the blue and yellow arrows of joy soon emerge.
- There is an option to turn off the main road through Tresillian (A390) earilier than the route indicates, to take a public right of way across a reedbed and rejoin the road into Truro. It's a little more pleasant than sticking on the busy and noisy road.
- The road that takes you into Truro, after turning off the A390 is quite a dangerous walk. It has some blind bends and is very narrow in places. It seems cars use it as a rat run despite being signposted as a "quiet lane".

After some consideration, this road and its lack of pavements and high volume of traffic and blind corners present a safety issue. I have helped review two alternatives and suggest using those for walking between these two locations.
