18 Apr 2024This route was quite scenic and lovely in many places, with a nice mix of mostly fields, tracks, trails and small lanes. It’s overall probably the best foot route between Trowbridge and Bratton; however there are some less ideal issues to be aware of:
It crosses a number of fields, plowed and not, where the footpath hasn’t been cleared or cut, resulting in quite high grass in places, and very clumpy soil in others. We did it in dry weather, but in wet I imagine these would be very very muddy…. It was also a little difficult to find the exact route in these instances; however using the gpx it was pretty easy to find our way back on track if we wavered a little.
There are some wobbly or partially broken stiles, including one that required you to lift up a large plank of wood set across it. Another involved having to unhook an electric fence (plastic safety handle was provided though), and there was one large metal gate that was firmly locked so the only way to pass was to climb up and over.
A number of fields had horses in them, but they weren’t threatening or aggressive in any way.
Perhaps the least pleasant stretch is the one bit along a moderate busy and fast road. (As pointed out by another reviewer.) Luckily this isn’t too long.
Three stars: could be better, but could also be a lot worse. And we saw deer!.

29 Mar 2022I agree with the initial survey, and review
The route out of Trowbridge up to the Dunge Road is fine, other than crossing the very busy A350, which can be challenging. The road section to Dunge, whilst quiet, the vehicles when passing, do so at 60 mph. I did not enjoy the section from Capps Lane to the Trowbridge Rd, due to multiple stiles/gates generally all overgrown.
An alternative ( no further ) is to continue along Capps Lane to the tee junction, turning right along the Trowbridge Rd, rejoining the route adjacent to the Recreational Ground. This also avoids crossing the railway lines.
I recorded the route as 6.85 mi, including slight diversions finding/avoiding the overgrown stiles.
The route overall has circa 10 stiles, and 12 gates ( various types ).
