Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 May 2022I started this route from Tring. The start was OK, a series of footpaths through the back alleys. It wasn't always the easiest to follow but I didn't go far wrong. Reaching the Wendover Arm of the canal was a rather marvellous moment. It's a lovely stretch, very peaceful! Passing Tringford Reservoir just added to the appeal of the walk. Crossing the road over to Startop's End Reservoir needed some care, but it wasn't too hard. The reservoir itself was a highlight of the walk, the countryside to the north, the cormorants crowding on the islands. This had 5 star all over it, rejoining the canal was welcome and the navigation to leave and rejoin the towpath was smooth. I'd read the review of Tripit one but my OS app was unaffected by the bug which indicated staying on the towpath side of the canal. Crossing over to the footpath indicated started well, the path was well tended and cut back. When I reached a house, the owner's dog came out to greet me as the footpath petered out into an overgrown morass. The owner came out and I asked him of the path really carried on as marked. He said yes. So I carried on, it's apparent that nobody walks along there. No brambles, but lots of long grass and weeds. The ground ground underneath was very uneven, not great when walking past a body of water! I made it to the end and crossed the field out to the main road. The main road is 60mph and has no pavement. It's long and straight, so doesn't feel overly unsafe, but it's not relaxing. The final section into Pitstone at least has a pavement. My water had run out by this stage of the walk and I was keen to get to a shop in Pitstone. Sadly there were none! Eliminating the section on the "other side of the canal" and the walk along the lane would vastly improve what is otherwise a really lovely walk. This version is a pass, but only just.
