Description
This route takes you through Coed-y-Brenin forest and alongside the river. There is an excellent waterfall to see enroute and the river looks spectacular especially in autumn colours.
From Traswfynydd it follows the country road as there was zero traffic on it. Trying to plot a route from Trawsfynydd using paths would be unnecessarily complicated and arduous - probably through boggy fields.
Most of the route is on very quiet country lanes or well established tracks through the forest. There are just a couple of short muddy sections.
Through Coed-y-Brenin there are multiple alternative paths. I plotted this to keep it simple by following the river - which is the highlight. Out of the forest and towards Dolgellau is another deserted country lane - with a great view to Cadair Idris.
Cymer Abbey is hidden away in a caravan park - you have to use the caravan park entrance to get to it. If you're looking for a side quest.
There is a short section by an A road at Ganllwyd - but there is a footpath and its not too busy. Although the map does show a bridge and stepping stones as one way across near here - after exploration I found the bridge was closed and the "stepping" stones hazardous. So a quick detour through the village is required !
Take some refreshments as there are no shops / cafes / pubs on the way - not my fault - its very remote out there !

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

03 Nov 2024Beautiful route!
I got the T2 bus from Dolgellau to Trawsfynydd. You can pre-book tickets on the TrawsCymru app. I loaded up with goodies from Dodds bakery in the main square before hand.
A great way to view the Rhinogs on the road out of Trawfynydd. Its remote country up there so be prepared. Coed-y-Brenin is a great forest and the waterfall and river are the highlights.
As its mostly on very quiet country lanes and well maintained forest tracks it makes a lot easier to walk. If you walk from Twasfynydd its downhill all the way!.
