Description

This suggested route avoids some tricky access issues around Noahdale midway along Todpac1, and offers not only a much more scenically attractive route but makes up too for the closure of the Packhorse Inn (and the consequent lack of refreshment /accommodation options there) with two alternatives in Blackshaw Head.
1. Follow the original directions for Todpac1 uphill out of Todmorden - signposted as a Calderdale Way Link path - for the first km or so.
2. Turn right along the Calderdale Way when you reach that (i.e. instead of continuing up to Windy Harbour).
3. Continue along that signposted route, turning left at the Great Rock (resting to enjoy the great views perhaps!), to skirt Staups Moor, cross Hippins Bridge and on up to Blackshaw Head.
4. From the chapel, after approx 0.5km still on the Calderdale Way, you then have a choice, depending on your preference for refreshment options:
(i) A short detour via the Pennine Bridleway will lead you to the New Delight Inn at Jack Bridge (refreshments & camping). If you choose this option, you will then need to retrace some of your steps but leave the Pennine Bridleway to follow the footpath instead along the Colden Water to join the Pennine Way at Hebble Hole (for a great local picnic and bathing spot).
5. From Hebble Hole, leave the Calderdale Way taking the Pennine Way instead, climbing to your alternative option...
(ii) A short, c.200m detour along to High Gate and May's Shop - an iconic stop on the Pennine Way, and an incredibly well stocked farm shop, which is open practically 24/7 and offers hot drinks and ice creams etc depending on the season, as well as basic camping options.
6. You then have two further options to complete the walk to the former Packhorse Inn:
7a. Continue on past May's Shop to rejoin the Pennine Bridleway and the route of Todpac1 just beyond Egypt (!); or
7b. Retrace your steps from May's Shop to continue on the Pennine Way (which then joins the joins PacHeb for the final 2km of that route) and join the original TodPac1 route above Gorple Cottages.
8. From Gorple Cottages follow the Todpac1 route for the final km to the former Packhorse Inn

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
