Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

31 Jan 2022I completely agree with the previous reviewer. If you asked most local people which route they would chose to walk between Tod & Hebden Bridge (for typical Slow Ways purposes, e.g. to walk to work, school or the shops or something) most would say, just follow the canal towpath.
The one drawback of that is that it can get busy at weekends with cyclists too - not all of whom are necessarily respectful of walkers (especially if, like me, you're a little hard of hearing and don't always hear the ting of their bell).
Having said that, the twisty undulating path through Household Wood is great for views, and getting away from everyone else - and makes for a much more varied and interesting walk.
Besides the narrowboats and their community and wildlife alongside the canal, it has a real mix of sites along the way, ranging from community allotments (beware of straying off the path here for fear of being composted!), a friendly welcome and teas on match days at the cricket ground about half way along, old mill buildings - and, er, a large sewage works. To compensate, there are excellent pubs at either end too!.

28 Apr 2021 (edited 27 Jun 2023)The majority of this route follows the canal towpath and is clear, direct, accessible for most users and enjoyable to use. However, the diversion up through Horsehold Wood is an unnecessary complication, and the route can be improved by following the recently upgraded canal towpath throughout. With this tweak made, this would be an excellent Slow Way.
For those able to navigate a steep cobbled section of towpath, suggest a small diversion using the tunnel under the main road in Todmorden, avoiding the need to cross the traffic to get to/from the station.

06 Jul 2023Hi. I agree entirely with your review. I have plotted and added an updated version of this route (TodHeb 4) which follows the tow path all the way. I've made a small change to the section in Todmorden to match the route of the cycle path.
