Description

Updated version of ThaGor1, with a few adjustments as roads and paths changed, and there were a few odd inaccuracies.

It remains distinct from ThaGor3, which is a longer, but I suspect equally valid route

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

05 Apr 2026 Spring

I walked this on a pleasant and mostly sunny day, from Thatcham to Goring. It had rained a little in the past week.

The first section is along pavements in Thatcham, not so fun. You pass by the station and go across an industrial estate (photo #1).

Luckily, soon the nice paths beckon, and you start going up hill through woods (photo #2). For quite some time, with easy going paths (photo #3). After another hill, there was a little muddy path (photo #4). But luckily it was only a short section. Then the route goes down into Bucklebury (photo #5).

The route then continues across an equestrian centre. I never quite like doing these, but luckily there is a short detour on the west side, alongside a road, Chapel Lane, which was really not busy. The route (regardless) also goes up again.

After passing the Pot Kiln pub (photo #7), the route goes towards the M4. The paths there can be a little hard to spot, especially just north of Frilsham.
You cross the M4 with a bridge alongside Chapel Lane again (photo #8). Before you get to Yattendon, you pass by the Renegade brewery and tap room.

The road through Yattendon doesn't really have pavements, but this wasn't a problem (photo #9). After going around the churchyard, there are more great paths through woods, and alongside fields. It was a little uneven here (photo #10). Again, it's fairly hilly, but the views are wide.

The steepest climb (photo #11) and downward is just south of Streatley. It's really steep here, but the views are nice (photo #12).

You then cross the Thames (photo #13), with the final stretch being through Goring (photo #14) towards the station.

Excellent route, although a little hilly.
