Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

16 Jun 2023Lovely route along the Kennet Canal.
You can stop at the Rowbarge at Midgham for food & drink, or at the Aldermaston Tea Rooms at Aldermaston Wharf.
Both are right by the canal towpath.

25 Sep 2021An easy route to follow alongside the Kennet and Avon canal. The route runs from the middle of Thatcham town with plenty of shops to hand, along pavements down to Thatcham station. From that point, it crosses the level crossing (with the option to walk over the bridge if the gates are down) and then left along the canal path. It passes several locks and crosses over a small weir at Colthrop. It passes the popular Rowbarge pub at Woolhampton which serves food and has a large garden with plenty of seating by the canal. The canal is not fenced off from the pub garden. From there, the route continues to Aldermaston Wharf where there is a small tearoom adjacent to the canal. There is a short section of road (with a pavement) from the canal to the station. The canal path is generally level except for inclines at a couple of bridge crossings. It is generally in good condition but can become muddy in places during wetter weather.

21 Aug 2021Thatcham to Aldermaston Wharf (Thaald 1) review.
A relatively straightforward Slow Way along a stretch of the picturesque Kennet & Avon Canal.
The route starts in the centre of Thatcham with plenty of amenities to hand. There is some street walking to reach the canal towpath. Note that Thatham Station, as an alternative start point, is right by the canal.
The Rowbarge at Woolhampton is a welcome break point, and one of my favourite pubs in the area (Photo 1).
Leave the canal after Aldermaston Lock (Photo 2), crossing the Lift Bridge to reach Aldermaston Station.

11 Aug 2021A straightforward and pleasant route largely using the Kennet and Avon canal towpath. This section of the towpath is also designated cycleway as part of National Cycle Network Route 4.
Walked from Aldermaston to Thatcham:
There is a short walk from Aldermaston Station to the towpath which is clearly signed.
In August, the condition of the towpath was perfect for walking, occasionally narrowing for dense vegetation. Some sections are likely to get muddy in winter. The route is flat with the only inclines at canal bridge crossings. There are a few gates but no stiles.
Approx. 3.5km from Aldermaston, the Rowbarge pub, located right by the canal, serves drinks and food and has plenty of outdoor seating. Also, there are several benches along the route if you want to take a break.
At Thatcham station the route leaves the towpath, crossing over the level crossing to follow alongside the road into the town centre - approx. 1.5km.
