Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

05 Apr 2025Walked on a gloriously sunny day after a record breaking driest March since... A lovely route with steep wooded valleys spread with wood anemones and wild garlic, a pair of red kites leisurely dancing together across the landscape, blackthorn and cherry plum blossom, squeaky lapwings, a path through an apple orchard just waiting to be walked at blossom time.
But the GPX line is poor quality. That's fine if you are copying it onto a paper Ordnance Survey map but it is tiresome and maybe misdirecting if using an app, especially one like the Slow Ways app that is based on Open Street Maps not OS. It's definitely over 50m away in places and there's a few places where the green lines on OS don't match actual positions of paths too as they've shifted. It may be frustrating, say, if you are trying to put on extra speed approaching Rye to make sure of an hourly train. (Which was cancelled!)
So I'm going to check my GPS track against the recent version I uploaded and if it's sufficient I'll put a review there, or resubmit if needed.
In the meantime enjoy the walk but it is more challenging than you might expect given the geography. There are many gates (two unopenable field gates you have to climb over), unrestored paths across ploughed fields, long steep woodland steps, several very tall or very shonky stiles, one of the footbridges has 3 rotten planks, a crumbled riverbank, fencing leaning heavily into the path which could be tricky soon. Will report to council. There were many sheep grazing but I saw no other livestock apart from distant horses. But one field had warnings re cattle and a few shielded electric fences. On the plus side there was no winter flooding as mentioned in the other review (between Dumbourne Farm and Fairview Farm?), and very little mud in general (plenty of dried out wellies-mud though) and the Horse and Cart pub in Peasmarsh has reopened. The Swan in Wittersham, shown on OS, has been closed for a while, but they do have a shop. I didn't enjoy going through Peasmarsh as the A268 traffic felt (was?) fast and noisy after such a peaceful walk and if you aren't going to the Horse and Cart maybe a quieter way to the south could be found. If not I'd definitely recommend taking the Peasmarsh footpath closer to Jempsens (medium sized supermarket) instead of through the caravan site.

10 Feb 2023Very nice undulating path with lots of admire. It can be a bit treacherous underfoot, and sometimes flooded in winter, between Smallhythe Place and Tilder Gill south of Tenterden but if you're ready for that then it isn't a problem.

22 Mar 2025Hi Chris. This route line is pretty euphemistic, could be difficult to follow using the Slow Ways app or other non Ordnance Survey maps that don't distinguish Rights of Way from private tracks. In a few places it's between 60m and 120m away from the true position, that can be tricky in woodland where you can't orient yourself by landmarks, especially if there are unmapped side paths. And if you follow the paths it comes out a mile longer too.
I've uploaded it again but using snap-to-fit which I hope will be easier to follow.
