Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Tadley to Spencers Wood (Tadspe 1) review.

The first section of the Slow Way, from Tadley to Silchester, follows the same route as Tadley to Reading (see Tadrea 1): through woods, by The Pelican pub in Pamber Heath, and across Silchester Common (Photo 1). The two routes diverge at Silchester Roman Town (Calleva Atrebatum).

The route follows the remains of the Roman walls (Photo 2), and passes by the amphitheatre (Photo 3). It leaves the site by what would have been the east gate.

The footpath follows ‘The Devil’s Highway’: the Roman road between Silchester and Londonium (Photo 4). The straight journey eastwards crosses fields, follows a quiet lane, and then a wooded byway (Photos 5 & 6).

The Slow Way turns NE at a crossroads, to head directly towards Spencers Wood. There is a short section of road with a grass verge. The route then follows a tarmacked lane to reach a footpath through woods (Photo 7). Woodcock Lane passes by a WWII pillbox (Photo 8).

A road bridge with pavement crosses the A33 (Photo 9). The final approach into Spencers Wood is along a wooded footpath (Photo 10).

Spencers Wood has a pub, convenience store and a bakery.

This Slow Way was straightforward to navigate and I greatly appreciated its historical features.
