Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 Jul 2021Tadley to Reading (TadRea 1) review.
This is very much a Slow Way of two halves. To break down the three-star rating: I would give Tadley to Burghfield Common a solid four stars, and the walk into Reading from Burghfield Common just two stars.
The route from Tadley crosses a wooded common (Photo 1) and through Pamber Heath, past The Pelican pub. It then crosses Silchester Common (Photo 2). Silchester itself is bypassed, although The Calleva Arms pub is only a short distance away.
The walk follows the Silchester Trail (Photo 3) to skirt the NW corner of Silchester Roman town. I made a detour east along Wall Lane to take in the the town’s northern wall and amphitheatre.
The walk into Mortimer is across fields and through some woods. The stiles were remarkably small (Photo 4) and the woodland path (Photo 5) was, in places, heavily overgrown by brambles. The streets into Mortimer pass a convenience store and café. The Horse & Groom pub is off the central green.
The route out of Mortimer follows a bridleway through pleasant pine woods (Photo 6).
Walking through Burghfield Common and Burghfield is mainly along roads. A brief section has no pavement (Photo 7). There’s a brief field-path respite from roads (Photo 8).
The Reading Road (Photo 9) has a narrow pavement and this was overgrown with brambles on my walk, requiring me to step out into the busy road. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an alternative way over the M4. The route leaves the road at The Cunning Man pub for an attractive stretch of the river Kennet (Photo 10).
The current Slow Way leaves the river at Southcote lock, to become an unappealing street walk into Reading. I recommend a longer route which continues along the Kennet as far as the Oracle waterfront precinct. This route can be found as part of the Aldermaston Wharf to Reading (Aldrea 1) Slow Way.
