Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

29 Sep 2022 (edited 11 Jun 2023)Use SwaHar 3 instead, it resolves some of the road related problems but is broadly the same. SwaHar 1 is a bit different as it swaps out the polytunnels for Farningham Wood (very nice) but it has a bad road crossing of the A225 and yet more problematic road walking.
If you do want to walk this exact route these are the places where you should be particularly cautious:
The west end of Devon Rd, right in the middle of Sutton-at-Hone, traffic is coming straight off the busy A225/Dartford Rd. No pavement, steep bank with no verge, tight blind bend. I doubt anyone local walks it but it is at least easy to avoid.
Next and not fully avoidable is Rabbits Rd, east of South Darenth. High hedges, mostly steep banks, very rarely any verge, bendier than appears on a map, more and faster traffic than you would hope for. Was pretty grim during an unexpected afternoon fog. SwaHar 3 avoids some of it.
There is also a shorter no-pavement road walking part on Fawkham Rd outside Longfield (Hartley is not actually the end point). It's faster and busy but also wider, slightly better sightlines and much shorter. On one visit there was a shortcut through the field to the east cutting it out, but it was sown over next time. Nice sowing gap through the field though.
The entry onto path SD161 (to the west) from Fawkham Rd is camouflaged between trees, the fingerpost is even more hidden.
The short footpath between Canada Farm Rd and Dean Bottom (eastern end of Rabbits Road) was pretty overgrown on the second visit, easily avoided though.
The rest of the walk is much the same as SwaHar 3, both are mostly through arable fields, one woodland and some wooded path/lanes for occasional shade. The two walks share a long section through a large soft fruit farm, polytunnels all the way except through the farmworkers caravan site. Owners have put up extra signage to mitigate the maze-like effect.

21 Jan 2023I've not completed this route yet, but have done part of SwaHar 1. That has a pretty dicey road crossing at the A225/Dartford Rd to Calfstock Lane. It's a busy, fast road and heading west (from Swanley) the sightlines are particularly restricted, then Franks Lane has some blind bends without a footpath. It's much worse than the easily avoided dodgy bit of this route. On the other hand, Farningham Wood was lovely, and I had a lovely view north from Calfstock Lane. I could see Ship Lane Farm where this route goes. It is glasshouses all the way. Not nearly as scenic.
