Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This could be a 4 or 5 star walk except for a few sections of road walking with no pavements on roads that didn't feel safe. SwaHar 3 also has a bit of that, shared with this route but the worst is on SwaHar 1 alone.

At the bottom of Calfstock Lane you cross the A225/Dartford Rd. This is a fast busy road. There is a blind bend to the south, a high steep verge which you can't wait on. There is no crossing or island even though the east side has a good pavement and Calfstock Lane is the main way to the Farningham Wood nature reserve. Pretty hairy, but may be better in the other direction. On towards Horton Kirby on Franks Lane: twisty, high banks, dark under overhanging trees, traffic off the A225 doesn't slow much, far outside village 30mph limits.

More road walking further east that is (mostly) shared with SwaHar 2 and 3. Rabbits Rd: less busy but longer, narrower (but not enough to be quiet or slow), more blind bends and steep banks. The (avoidable) footpath down to Dean Bottom was very overgrown in early summer. Fawkham Rd, busy-ish but short, sometimes a field-side informal path on the east cuts that off. Footpath to the west was very well hidden.

Farningham Wood was lovely though, I'd like to go back and explore. And it was very easy to navigate, not always true through woodland. The first and last third of the route do overlap with SwaHar 3 (and 2) which is a bit safer but swaps Farningham Wood for a fruit farm filled with polytunnels. All 3 routes are mostly through arable fields but occasional wooded paths give some shade and variation. Small rolling hills, some lovely views.

Horton Kirby is a pretty village, with two pubs that do serve food and it has a Mon-Sat daytime bus although Arriva are threatening to stop some services. There are stiles, heavy gates, a narrow deep gully and width restrictions. Calfstock Rd was pretty slippery on an icy day.
