Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

The GPX file for this route is pretty shaky in the middle section, up to 200m away from the intended line in places. That misses too many turn points to follow using my directions app without having to refit the whole thing. It'd be more manageable (although tiresome) if map reading though.

I could upload a more accurate version but this route has several other flaws. It's only 20% off-road, with the rest all along fairly busy roads. There is only one mid-route break point where you can make a small diversion to an eating place (Horse and Groom, Wilmington). The roads do look pavemented though, and (the only) two short off road sections (N of Hextable and S of Wilmington) both have a "Fence/Gap" at the end according to the county council map, which might mean they are accessible.

This is not an on-the-ground review as these problems unspooled during an armchair-walk-through I did a few days before I planned to test/run/walk it, and that was enough to put me off but it might suit someone else.

I have uploaded an alternative: SwaDar Two. I think it's a much better fit for Slow Ways: only 1km longer, 2 mid-route breakpoints (5 eating places), and over 70% off road (compared to 20%) with very little on busy roads.

Update/edit Nov 2023:
Now there is a verified route for this Slow Way (SwaDar 2) I will flag this route - for accuracy - 200m out of sync is too much! I'm considering testing a new route loosely based on this because a short part of road on SwaDar 2 isn't ideal - also worth noting that SwaHar 3 and HarDar 1 join at South Darenth and this would be a good, if long, route between Swanley and Dartford.

I'm going to try swadar two through Hawley although the garden centre café seems to be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Toilets and coffee bar at Swanley Station. Food and coffee at Coop Filling Station in London Road, Swanley. Café in Central Park, Dartford. Toilets in Priory and Orchard shopping centres in Dartford.

Have fun John. This one is still on my to do list! The Chequers in Darenth is a short detour if you fancy pub grub. Their Sunday roast was huge.
