Description
Safe, direct and pleasant route mainly using roads between settlements. Route leaves Sutton Coldfield via New Hall Valley Country Park along Plants Brook. It then follows pavements through Walmley and then there is a spot of verge walking down a lane before it crosses a bridge over the A38. Pavements take it through Minworth and beyond. A pack horse bridge crosses the River Tame into Water Orton. The pavements beyond Water Orton take it through an underpass under the M6 Toll and M42. Crossing the A446 requires timing the traffic lights as there is no "green man" but there is a pedestrian island midway. From there remains only more pavement walking until the end at Coleshill via Coleshill Parkway Railway Station and a charming bridge over the River Cole. Rest stops at Walmley (3.5 km), Minworth (6.5km) and Water Orton (9km). Bus routes throughout. Railway stations at Water Orton and Coleshill Parkway

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

22 Feb 2022Good direct route easy to follow
Along pavements taking you past shops and pubs for stops if required.

14 Jan 2022Direct route through New Hall Valley Country Park and along mostly quieter roads with pavements. Care is needed crossing the narrow bridge into Water Orton and crossing the A446 but overall a very good route. There are several pubs along the way and in Coleshill to choose from as well as shops in Walmley and Water Orton.

15 Aug 2021I started my walk at the Coleshill end of the walk. The walk out of Coleshill towards the station (Coleshill Parkway) actually accounts for a sixth of the walk! The centre of the village is pretty and historic and you cross a pedestrian bridge which runs parallel with a single lane road bridge for cars. It was here that I saw an egret in the River Cole. Beyond there to the left is a residential and to the right a modern commercial development and you start to see how the proximity to 3 motorways has shaped the village. As you get nearer to the station the small units become large distribution centres. You walk along a short section of the A446 and I'm pleased to report that crossing it, to gain access to Water Orton Road, taking you under the M6 Toll and M42 was actually easier than I though it would be. Emerging from the underpass and with signs of HS2 to my left I was soon in Water Orton. There are a selection of pubs and takeaways here as well as a railway station. On the other side of the village is an old single lane bridge with spaces to step into. This was a slight challenge to cross but to be honest I was using the passing places to take photos of the River Tame as I crossed it! Beyond there is more pavement following as you head towards Minworth. I was aware of the massive sewage plant to my right but could not see, or smell it. Minworth itself offered more stopping opportunities. The route out of Minworth follows a B Road which goes across a bridge over the A38 to avoid the well signposted "Minworth Island" (That's "roundabout" for those of you from outside of the Midlands). The next section is along a lane but it has wide even verges which you can walk on. The once open countryside to the right is now a massive building site. Beyond there Walmley has a very suburban feel and its centre is an impressive set of options for refreshment and rest. The route is well paved, simple and straight. You enter Sutton Coldfield via New Hall Country Park and this was a really nice way to end the walk. Well nearly, the very last section is a straight line to the meeting point outside the Town Hall via the large residential streets. Direct, safe, varied and well served. Full marks!.
