Derick Rethans

11 Feb 2024 Winter

I walked this from Sunbury to Twickenham, on a cloudy afternoon, with a six nations game on at Twickenham stadium.

From Sunbury the route starts alongside roads (photo #1, #2, #4), some with narrow pavements (photo #3). It isn't very long though, before you can make your way through Ludlow Park, and through a field of grass (photo #5). After a short section alongside an industrial estate (photo #6), the route then proceeds through Hanworth Park (photo #7). It was a little muddy there. On the east side (photo #8), after crossing Houndslow Road, the route as drawn, will want you to do down a side road with cottages, and then north on Mount Road to Hampton Road West. That is however blocked off. You need to go north along Houndslow Road, and then ideally use the signalled crossing to get to the north side of Hampton Road West. You then turn north onto Canterbury Road with another car-on-pavements issue (although allowed) (photo #9).

A little while later, you enter the green space along the river Crane, which was very pleasant with lush green colours (photo #10, #11, #12). At some point you need to divert to use signalled crossings at a big roundabout. If I would were to draw this route myself, I would have looped back to the river after crossing the bridge going north, to continue along the river. That avoids the traffic at the roundabout (photo #13) with its large set of lights. The rest of the route is mainly through Crane Park, and along the river (photo #14, #15). It was getting busier with people the closer I got to Twickenham.

The route then wants you to cross the river at Marsh Farm Lane, to continue along the south of the river, but this is closed off during game days (while I was there). Instead, you need to continue along Craneford Way to Court Way, and then south along Whitton Road to get to the station. I couldn't see any shortcut through Crangeford Way Playing Fields — it looked like there was new recent fencing put up. Fighting through the crowds going the opposite way along London Road was unfun.

Good green route, but annoying to have to do detours and the slight inaccuracies.

13 Jul 2023 Summer

Although not the shortest route from Twickenham to Sunbury, it is a pleasant, mainly green way except for the last section into Sunbury. I started at Twickenham Station (toilets and refreshments on platform 5). There is Sainsbury's Local and M&S Food outside. The path starts opposite (Twickenham Rough) although this is closed when there's a major event at the stadium. There's a now a short cut across Craneford recreation ground. Kneller Gardens has a good café and toilets 100 metres from the river (///scary.lake.trip) and not really a detour. Along the river I spotted a Little Egret.
To avoid crossing the Great Chertsey Road you can follow the river under two bridges then turn right and back to go along the cycle track next to the main road. The surface through Crane Park appears to have been improved with no muddy patches. There are shops and cafes in Hampton Road West before crossing at the traffic lights. In Hanworth Park you follow the surfaced path straight ahead then fork left along a broad grassy path. The nearest toilets at Sunbury Cross are in Tesco Extra (900 metres), although you pass the Hare and Hounds pub in Vicarage Road. I used the 216 bus to get back to Kingston.

Very pleasant walk along riverside path, across open park land although the Sunbury end is mainly on a pavement next to a road. This is one kissing gate however this does have a reasonable space for a push chair. Mainly on paved or well maintained gravel paths.

Additional point - there is no access from Mount Road and Willow Cottages and vice versa. Use Hampton Road West and Hounslow Road.
