Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

02 Aug 2024 Summer

I walked this route between Sunderland and Seaham. The walk from the railway station at the start took us along city streets and then through an attractive park. We then walked along several streets and back lanes before heading down to the coast where we joined the England Coast Pat. The route took us along the cliffs towards Seaham along well signed and fairly well maintained paths. At Seaham Hall Carpark we headed inland towards the town centre and our destination. This was a very pleasant route in warm summer weather with just a couple of patches of mud to negotiate.

This is a great route to walk on a day walk, particularly if the weather is good. It's mostly very flat -- there is a steep climb up the stairs from the North Beach at Seaham to access the route if you choose to walk on the beach, but it's also possible to continue on the pavement, which involves less climbing.

The majority of the route follows the England Coast Path (waymarked at points) but it's also possible to change/alter slightly (e.g. by walking alongside train tracks rather than the cliffs). Ryhope Dene/access to beach is worth a stop.

I would advise caution if very windy (as bits across cliffs between Ryhope and Seaham are very close to the edge and it's very exposed) and if it has rained recently -- the fields easily become waterlogged on the same stretch. Otherwise some fantastic views, plus a variety of rest stops at both ends (Seaham and Sunderland); if stuck/pressed halfway, a detour to Grangetown services is an option.

I loved walking this coastal route! It's direct, easy to follow and defo the best and most scenic way to get to Seaham from Sunderland. I walked it in winter and the path gets very muddy in some places. I'd recommend stopping at Ryhope beach, it feels like a hidden gem (Check tide times) !.
