Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked from Stratford to Shipston. Relatively flat the whole way, a variety of paths, fields and roads, though the latter were mostly fairly quiet country lanes. Agree with other reviewers that the two pubs at Alderminster and Halford make very convenient stop-offs! Took me about 5.5 hours of walking in total. There were some parts that were a little muddy, but mostly it could be avoided or didn't last long - except for the path going through the fields around Parkhill Farm (between Halford and Little Honington) which were hard-going I will admit! My only recommendation to the route would be to walk along the east side of the River Avon in Stratford which goes past the recreation ground and has no traffic, rather than the west (town) side which is busier and along roads. But that's a personal choice of course!.

Really enjoyed this route, which we did northwards from Shipston today. There was just a bit too much road walking for me to give it five stars, but all things considered it's probably the best route between the two towns. We hadn't had any rain for at least a couple of weeks, so the going was really good for the time of year. There's a couple of choices for pub refreshments if you time your walk right for opening times at either Halford or Alderminster.

After leaving the built up area of Shipston, via the Centenary Way, you pass over a couple of footbridges (photos 1&2) before getting to Fell Mill Lane and through the village of Honington. The route follows the road and changes to the Shakespeare's Way after Honington. After leaving the road by the windmill, this was the wettest part of the walk (photo 6) and would no doubt get really boggy after rain.

You've got to take a bit of care crossing the Fosse Way at Halford, which is about a third of the way of the route. At this point you have your first refreshment choice at the Halford Bridge Inn. The route then takes you around the Ettington Park Hotel, which as another reviewer correctly pointed out, there is no permissible route through the grounds (photo 8) so stick to the mapped right of way.

After crossing the busy A3400, the route takes you along the road through Crimscote and past some very nice houses before crossing a field next to the river and taking you back to the main road at Alderminster. This is roughly the half way point of the walk and The Bell pub was a great place to grab a pint and was busy serving some tasty looking food when we were there.

After leaving Alderminster, the route takes you through the small villages of Preston on Stour, Atherstone on Stour and finally Clifford Chambers before arriving into Stratford and walking past the final resting place of Shakespeare at Holy Trinity Church and along the banks of the Avon past the RSC.

The route does have it's fair share of footbridges and gates, although you don't have to negotiate any stiles which surprised me. With only mild sections of ascent or descent, It's a relatively level route as it generally follows the course of the River Stour. Definitely a recommended route and well worth your efforts.

My wife & I took a couple of leisurely days to walk this route from Shipston to Stratford. I’m sure that younger, fitter walkers could comfortably do it in one day, but we decided to break our journey at the Bell Inn in Alderminster, a decision we did not regret.
The first half of the route was relatively easy to navigate, though when leaving Shipston you do need to use Springhill Close to connect to the path leading to the footbridge over the River Stour. After the bridge we then cut diagonally north east across the field to connect to Fell Mill Lane, to avoid walking around the farmyard to the south. We lunched well at the Halford Bridge Inn before continuing on around the perimeter of Ettington Park Estate (no short cut through here) and on to Alderminster.
The walk then continued through the beautiful villages of Preston-on-Stour and Clifford Chambers before crossing the Avon prior to entering Stratford-upon-Avon.
We would heartily recommend this walk through the lovely Cotswolds countryside.
