25 Jun 2023 Summer

Walked in the early afternoon in the summer.

Not a very exciting route, with the exception of the very pleasant West Ham Park. It's a mix of reasonably quiet residential streets (although the one nearest to East Ham Station had a very high footfall for a street of it's kind), a few sections of busy commercial roads and the aforementioned West Ham Park.
Path surfaces are all paved, but uneven in places, particularly some of the short stretch connecting Vicarage Lane and the rest of Shirley Road - I would suggest using the crossing just by the east end of Shirley Road proper (also safer from a road crossing perspective), and simply walking down Shirley Road, or going left where the path splits.
I like the decision to walk along Broadway and not the pedestrianised area by the shopping centre. While it is noisier, it has far fewer people using it. I do wonder if an alternate route between Stratford Station and Shirley Road that avoids walking along Broadway would be an idea - going via the north perimeter of Stratford Park - might add a bit of scenery as well as being quieter.
As others have mentioned, because it goes through a fenced park, there has to be a detour after dusk, although in the summer that is quite late.
If I needed to walk between Stratford & East Ham I would take this route, or a slight variation again.

Hi Becky. Now StraEas 1 is verified maybe we could use another route. Is this what you imagined? https://www.plotaroute.com/routecollection/12945?units=km&maptype=paths
I flicked it north towards East Ham to go through Plashet Park as well. Or something going through Stratford Park then along Portway? The length of both is like StrEas 1 so any local knowledge would be great.

I can't offer local knowledge (unless I go back & walk it), but that certainly was what I had in mind. I like the change through Plashet Park too; I kept seeing it a street away & had to restrain myself from detouring toward it.

Most of this route takes quieter roads and has a nice off-road section through West Ham Park. It's all hard surfaced or paving but some of the ground is uneven/cracked or paving a little loose in places. West Ham Park closes at night but it has toilets including accessible toilets and a water fountain. There are shops at each end and in the middle around Green Street. I walked it on a Monday and at the Stratford end there were lot's of bins out which sometimes were blocking pavements a bit.

This is an inner city route mainly on quiet tree lined residential streets. It crosses a large attractive park, which is only open during daylight hours. However circumnavigating the park is not difficult if it is closed. There are local shopping streets intersecting at regular intervals on the route.

It is well served by public transport if people want to cut their walk short for any reason.
