Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I agree with all the previous reviews - this is a great route. No problems navigating, along mostly quiet lanes. There are some chained up, very aggressive, dogs that gave us a start in Lantyan - but other than that, no problems at all.

The section around Milltown Wood in particular is very beautiful.

Lovely route: I did not know it existed but I will definitely spend more time in Lostwithiel now. The Marsh areas close to St Blazey and the river walk near Lostwithiel is well, marshy, after heavy rain but the path is sound. Be alert crossing the B3269 otherwise a great walk.

Nice easy route. First section is in the town of st Blazey where you cross the railway line and walk past St Andrews pond and local nature reserve (worth a little detour here).

The route then follows a small stream through peaceful woodland. It’s flat here but the path is uneven and there are sections with boardwalks and steps. It was quite muddy the day we did it.

At the end of the path you reach treesmill where the route then follows quiet country lanes which take you up and down hills until you reach the B3269. There is a very small section of the route along here. As it is one of the main roads to Fowey it does get busy with cars.

The next bit of the route is along lanes to Lantyan and on to Milltown where you leave the road and take the footpath to Lostwithiel passing under the magnificent Milltown viaduct before crossing the fields to emerge by Pill farm. Here the route takes you down the railway bridges which you pass under and into Coulson Park and then alongside the river to Lostwithiel.

Really enjoyed this walk. Lots to see!.

This Slow Way starts in Lostwithiel which is a very pleasant town with lots of amenities.

Leaving the town is straightforward, following the river, then taking a public footpath round the back of some houses and through a small woodland. I agree with a previous review that following the river would also be an option, but both work fine.

There is a nature reserve south of the town, which I accidentally walked into, following the river Fowey. Upon checking the map I saw that I was meant to be between the two railway lines and not between the river and both railways, so I backtracked and found the correct path, that deviates slightly from the river and doesn't go directly alongside it.

From then on it was straightforward quiet lanes and rights of way, some quite hilly, but pleasant for walking.

The final stretch was delightful - along a very straight a flat path which followed a stream all the way to the outskirts of Par and St Blazey. There was lots of wildlife here including a grey wagtail flying along the stream.

In some places there were steps/stiles so it is fine for walking, but probably not for wheeling.

This is a pleasant walk along well-used paths and quiet lanes. In Lostwithiel, however, the footpath between Dark Lane and Quay St is OK but could be very muddy. Instead, I recommend following the river through Coulson Park. If leaving Lostwithiel, turn right under the small bridge just before the playground, then left. If arriving in Lostwithiel, turn right when there are 2 bridges on either side, then follow the river into town.
