Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 Sep 2024A good shortish route, mostly through countryside, from a small village to a small town. Footpaths and some terrain make this foot-only.
Stanley Gate is an odd choice for a destination: whilst there's a pub, the bus service is extremely sporadic. From the pub, we cross the road (it can be busy, with no crossings) and head along Liverpool Road, but we're soon onto a grassy footpath alongside a hedge on the right. It eventually doglegs to the right, and we pass an old windmill before joining the road. Up and over the bridge across the M58, the paved road takes us through yhe quiet village of Bickerstaffe.
Once we're through the village and well past the church, the route runs along a rough farmtrack heading across the fields into the distance. Eventually, the track becomes a green track, and, after a while, meets Rainford Road, a dual carriageway. Here we cross to the unpaved road opposite, which we follow around, and then turn down a drive towards Ivy House Farm. Passing through the farmyard, at the end of the farmtrack, it narrows into a path running alongside the trees on the edge of the fields ahead.
Over a little footbridge, we pass along a narrow footpath before emerging onto an unpaved road. It's a rural road for the farms, so there should be little to no traffic. At the end, we follow the track to the left. Once past the first house, right along a driveway to a gate to the road.
The road is unpaved, so care is necessary, but once we're around the bend, it becomes paved as the housing reappears. Once we're past the station, we turn down an unpaved drive which becomes a footpath at the car park for the allotments. At the junction, we continue ahead, before turning left along a earth and stone footpath, with trees on our left. This emerges onto a residential road, and, after a couple of turns, we arrive in the centre of Rainford.
A good and straightforward route, with some very enjoyable rural sections.
