Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

28 Jun 2024Leaving Westow up to Spy Hill and then into Howsham wood was straight forward. There are 2 footpaths into the wood, the first is impassable and completely overgrown, the second is marked and passable. We walked to the east of the wood across 2 fields. The OS route is clear of the route but this did not match up with the worn path which leads straight to Howsham Wood. We took the OS route (the other route may have been a better route depending on access). Once into the wood, the map was clear and relatively straight forward to navigate. We walked through Howsham with no issues. We followed the road to another footpath, the footpath sign was buried in a bush. We walked along the footpath which was the side of a field. There was no real footpath markings on the ground (see pic 1) and so we had to walk as best as we could along the edge of the field (pic 2). This was a recurring theme, finding any sort of track -- or making our own. At the Rush, there was literally banks of nettles and thistles that we had to negotiate (often by pushing back to make a track to go through). There would be 5m of hope and then 10m of a very old track. Scrayingham came and went and would have been easy road walking to Buttercrambe except that the bridge at Stamford Bridge was impassable and hence making the roads around Buttercrambe more busy. We joined the footpath after the junction and from there to Stamford Bridge was sheer hell, no discernible footpath, nettles and thistles and a barbed wire fence to keep us away from Bleach Farm. Indeed I noticed that the farmer had planted hawthorn on the boundary to make the footpath event more impenetrable. This continued all the way into Stamford Bridge. I was so disgusted that I will be writing to the council. Some of my colleagues came away with various cuts and bruises.
Would you walk it again? NO - I am a seasoned walker and thus is the WORST FOOTPATH that I have used. If I do this route again, I will be taking a scythe.
Would you suggest it to others? NO
Is it reasonably safe? NO
Is it reasonably accurate? YES
Does it have access issues? YES.
