Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

There's not much walking in Gloucester itself before you're following footpaths across the floodplain of the River Severn. I hadn't actually appreciated at the time that we were actually walking on an island, Alney Island, between channels of the Severn. 4km in, having walked for a section by the river, there is a pub in Maisemore. A gentle climb delivers great views in all directions. On the outskirts of Ashleworth, there is a Tithe Barn, which was a spot of magic on the route. Beyond Ashleworth, the route leaves the Three Choirs Way, which the route sporadically follows. We found it was the route that the locals were using. Before arrival in Staunton, there is a >very< steep descent on a boggy hillside which could present challenges. The village of Staunton doesn't offer much except animal feed. What used to be the Swan Pub is now a volunteer run community hub and cafe that is only open for a couple of hours a day. This route is safe and direct, always choosing the obvious direction and with the only potential hazards being cattle in fields and the occasional stretch of quiet lane. The supplies are mainly at the Gloucester end, Maisemore has a pub and Ashleworth has a small post office, best bring provisions if you think you'll get hungry. In terms of ease of following the route, despite the obvious choices, there are a multitude of footpaths and as a consequence, points where you have to make sure you've actually followed the plotted route. There are stiles and the steep muddy bank near Staunton so accessibility could be a problem. The walk was mainly a relaxing and enjoyable stroll, the surrounding views setting an inspiring context. Definitely one I'd recommend.
