02 Feb 2024I walked this route from Wokingham to Spencer's Wood. I actually really enjoyed the route as it meandered out of Wokingham and across the countryside but as soon as I got to the new housing estate between Shinfield and Spencer's Wood I found the way blocked by construction work. I dropped down onto the Hyde End Road and walked along that to regain the route just before Spencer's Wood.
If you walk this from the Spencer's Wood end navigation may be easier but the new housing estate may still cause problems.
I think this route will be great once construction work finishes.
One thing to note is that the footpath near Shinfield Grange seems to have been diverted, it was not a problem but may prove useful for anyone trying to use this route.

The route out of Spencers Wood follows back streets, a byway, and through a new housing estate.
The approach into Shinfield avoids a construction site (as of July 2022). The footpaths through the village cross Hollow Lane. Detour south at this point for amenities.
The footpath out of Shinfield is overgrown and narrow, pressed up against a construction site (Photo 1).
The Slow Way crosses the Eastern Relief Road and soon turns right onto a footpath (Photo 2). It runs through farmland to a bridge over the River Loddon (Note: the Slow Way crosses Spewok 1 at this point).
The route turns east to follow a straight lane between fields (Photo 3) and past many cows at The Centre for Dairy Research.
The Slow Way leaves the lane, which becomes a private access road for farm vehicles, for a byway running parallel. This becomes an access issue at (SU759689). The Slow Way skips a loop of the byway via the private access road (Photo 4). I met a local walking his dog along the road. He said there has been no problem with walkers using the road, just be vigilant for farm vehicles. In light of this, I’m okay with verifying the route. An alternative is simply to stick to the byway.
The byway ends at Sindlesham. There’s a brief walk along roads with pavements, a break point at The Walter Arms (Photo 5), and then a byway towards Wokingham.
The urban walk to Wokingham Station is broken up by footpaths (Photo 6) and quiet back streets.
