Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Spencers Wood to Heckfield 1 (Spehec 1) review.

A walk south from Spencers Wood, first alongside a main road, but then a quiet lane and path between a country park and water meadow. Unfortunately, there is a dicey final stage into Heckfield.

The Slow Way begins in Spencers Wood, near a convenience store and a bakery. The walk to Swallowfield is by pavement, narrow in places, along the B3349 (Photo 1). It crosses the Loddon, a familiar river during my Berkshire rambles (Photo 2).

Swallowfield has a break point at The Crown pub (Photo 3). Quiet lanes lead south. These cross the Roman Road (aka Devils Highway) out of Silchester (Photo 4).

The Slow Way continues south on a path between Wellington Country Park (hidden from view) and the Wellesley Water Meadow (Photo 5). I paused to meet some inquisitive hens (Photo 6).

The route then reaches the busy Bramshill Road. Taking note of the previous review, I decided to try both ways to the junction [SU732608]. I agree that the routed path via a footpath and B3011 is not safe. The B3011 is used by large vehicles, and there is a point where it narrows at a bend with hardly any verge. I’ve therefore not verified this Slow Way, for safety reasons.

Taking the Bramhill Road requires vigilance but I found it tolerable (Photo 7). A short distance back along the B-road is a rusty gate to the footpath into Heckfield (Photo 8). See Hecyat 1 (Heckfield to Yateley) for this alternative route.

I would be ok with verifying an amended route.

This route is not safe to walk.

The route as published uses the B3011 which is a 'sunken way' with no verges and is extremely narrow for the traffic it carries. See photo 1 - the lorries can barely pass, there is no room for pedestrians.

I attempted to complete the route using the road from Bramshill. This was a little less dangerous, but I had to stand on the verge very frequently to allow traffic to pass (see photo 2). The verge itself is not suitable to walk on due to vegetation and its uneven surface ( I nearly fell into the road).
