Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A pleasant walk, marred by a problematic middle section between ///stuck.melon.grow and ///tiles.book.living including: a narrow path overgrown with thorns which once teetered along a crumbling stream bank - the handrail didn't seem a good solution long term, unofficial and unsigned rerouting around paddocks with electric fencing, stiles with rotten cross pieces, stiles surrounded by thick mud or thorns, and extreme mud on unrestored arable field paths. At the north end of all that the route was incorrectly drawn, which would make the path neglect seem even worse and could not be resolved by better maintenance or drier weather - so route will be flagged for accuracy.

At the West Horndon end the route taken south from the village goes around a tight blind bend on a busy road outside the 30mph zone, when there is an alternative that doesn't. I am taking Strider's word for this from their RomWes 1 review. I used the parallel path (Strider approved) from WesBas 1 instead which was fine, and only lightly muddy, a marvel given recent weather. Although the field north of Slough House was rather waterlogged, this could be avoided by following the field edge, as OSM mapping suggests.

I went wrong, distracted by a good bit in an audiobook, and missed a turning through the solar farm, but other paths through it that I returned by were extraordinarly churned up, and deliberately blocked by machinery in places. I was carrying about a kilo of mud per boot by the time I rejoined the route.

Near S Ockendon a heavy metal bar/gate made the track into a limbo course - the nominal purpose was preventing plant machinery from squashing fragile humans but why was it left down on a Sunday?

Luckily easy fixes exist, except for the metal gate and possibility of meeting heavy machinery on the tracks, which should resolve when the land fill is full, or the solar farm is complete. So I've uploaded a new route.

I cannot recommend that anyone walks this route unfortunately. Within the first mile we found ourselves having to find an alternative route as there was no bridge to cross a stream/ditch. After approx 2 miles we got to a section of the route which was nearly inaccessible owing to the 2 ft high nettles and brambles that filled the extremely narrow path. It is also borderline dangerous with drops to one side of the path of about 10ft and some very uneven ground. This "dangerous" and inaccessible section lasted for approx 1 mile, and i would suggest that the landowners have "actively" neglected this route so as to make it nearly unpassable. The last mile and a half of the route was pleasant with easy walking and did terminate at a lovely village pub, unfortunately at the moment the pub is not currently offering food, which was a shame.

I hoped the overgrown path you walked in the summer may have been cut back by mid winter, but no. At least the nettles had died down so I could see where the stream bank was crumbling away.

PS I've uploaded a new version which should be ok, if you are near enough to test it, or are happy to judge the new bit using Google Street View perhaps you can leave that a review too?
