Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 May 2022Walked from Burgess Hill to Southwater on a glorious sunny day on 27/05/2022. Although longs sections of the walk are beautiful and easily followed, there are enough issues on the first half of the route to mark it down to 4*.
The main issues are that;
1. It is impossible to cross the A2300 dual-carriageway at the end of Pookbourne Lane. The alternative is to walk down the pavement / cycle path to the roundabout at the Hickstead intersection of the A23 and cross there. It is not a big deal if you are heading from BH to Southwater, but is would be a bit of a pain if you were following the route as is in the other direction. You'd have to retrace your steps for a bit.
2. Hickstead Lane from Hickstead to Twineham is about a mile long and it is quite well used by cars, vans and lorries. It has no verges or pavements for pedestrians. The traffic is not constant, but I thought it was a bit too busy to be used as a Slow Way.
3. In Burgess Hill, some of the chosen footpaths are a bit overgrown, little used and really add nothing to the route. Also crossing London Road at the end of Norman Road as shown on the route is tricky. You would be better off crossing at the Royal George traffic lights, then carrying on down Royal George Road, then resuming the route as plotted from Orchard Road.
4. There are several overgrown paths between Twineham and Wineham. One path I had to crouch to walk through. It was a bit of a hobbit tunnel.
On the plus side, there are some great sections and I felt the section from Cowfold to Southwater was nigh on perfect. Cowfold, at roughly the half way point has shops and cafes but no public WC. The Hickstead Services has a Burger King and petrol station. There is a pub at Wineham, The Royal Oak - I didn't try it.
This is a rural route so expect stiles, gates, footbridges, cattle, horses etc. Dry when walked, some of the fields had long grass.
