Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

07 May 2021 (edited 27 Jun 2023)This is a generally good route. There are however a few things that need to be considered:
1. There is no path between Brent Avenue, South Woodham Ferrers and the B1012 (housing estate). Instead follow Hullbridge Road north to roundabout, then B1012 until a footpath takes you north on the original route.
2. In entering Purleigh, from south, it would be more interesting and less road walking to take path leading to the Purleigh Hall, Church and The Bell (food available).
3. The disused railway running into Maldon has a permissive path along the old embankment which runs through the Maldon Wick Nature Reserve.
I have uploaded a SOUMAL TWO which incorporates these minor changes.
Overall the route is largely off road and passes through some interesting areas. There are a few fields that have been ploughed and crops cover the OS mapped line. Easy to walk around the edge of field.
The route winding through the streets of Maldon to the town centre manages to avoid most of the housing estate roads.
A longer alternative route in to Maldon would be to go from Purleigh to Mundon (interesting church), then footpaths north to the Promenade Park . This would be slightly longer.
