Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

03 May 2023I walked from Hedge End to Southampton. The initial walk up St John's Road was much pleasanter than I thought it would be - lots of attractive Victorian and Edwardian houses with the parish church oddly positioned at the top of the hill. Netley Common and Shoreburs Greenway are lovely places to walk, and I'd echo the previous reviewer and suggest carrying on to the end of the Greenway if you have the time and energy. The spectacular views from the Itchen Bridge are the icing on the cake.

27 Nov 2022 (edited 05 Dec 2022)I didn't follow this route exactly as I turned right after crossing the Itchen Bridge and walked down through Woolston to Weston Shore where I picked up the start of Shoreburs Greenway and followed this until it rejoined the route at Sholing, following the start/end of the Itchen Way. Whilst this extended the walk slightly I feel it added to its enjoyment as you get to see the Solent and then essentially walk through a ribbon of green all the way up to Netley Common. I enjoyed this walk as I didn't know this greenway existed and like the other reviewers feel it's a good route between Southampton and Hedge End.
For the shortest and quickest route follow the route on the map (more road), for a more scenic route (more green) walk down to Weston Shore and pick up the Greenway there.

08 Jul 2022Links up a good number of green spaces but there are long sections beside roads, so not always quiet. Some parts of Shoreburs Greenway and Netley Common can become muddy in winter but nice and shady in summer. There are also a couple of road crossings that do not have pedestrian crossings (although most do). Itchen Bridge has a short section with no proper footway on the southern side of the western end.

28 Apr 2021Great route using the Shoreburs greenway a great connection between Woolston and Thornhill. two busy road crossings one A3024 (crossing points available) & harder one A27 with no crossing. A route of about half pavement walking and then half away from road taking in greenway and Netley Common. I can't think of a better way to get from Southampton to Hedge End.
