Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

14 Jan 2024Walked again in January 2024. It's still a fantastic route with nice views. The tricky part this time involved a fallen tree in Southall Park - easily avoidable if choosing a different path in the park (the obstacle is visible from a distance). Another unexpected section was a closed path through Glade Lane Canalside Park - an alternative route for pedestrians is clearly signposted though.

26 Feb 2023A more pleasant alternative to the direct Uxbridge Road.
Pros:
- quite a picturesque route, it has an impressive amount of green areas, and the canal
- quiet residential areas
- the surface is mostly flat
Cons:
- accessibility problem: there are stairs by the exit of the canal path part (going from Southall to Ealing): all the steps are tall, so they could be a problem not only for pushchairs and wheelchair users but also for people who walk but don't have enough knee mobility
- indirect
- I didn't spot any toilets in the middle of this 7km route.

25 Feb 2023A very enjoyable route between Southall and Ealing Broadway. As mentioned in a previous review, there is a flight of stairs up to Elthorne Park from the Grand Union Canal and on the canal path, some of the tarmac is uneven or has tree branches running under the surface which will affect pushchairs and wheelchairs. Apart from these issues, the walk was scenic along the canal and through Elthorne Park. After leaving Elthorne Park, the route mostly passes through quiet residential areas until it reaches Ealing Broadway, where there is a short stretch along The Broadway.
One thing to note is that the canal path and Radbourne Walk down the side of Northfield Allotments may be less safe after dark.

24 Jan 2023A much more pleasant walk at the Southall end than Route one. Using Southall Park and Glade Park is far nicer than walking the busy Uxbridge Road and Windmill Lane.
The canal stretch is nice and the “Hanwell Flight” of locks has a few information boards/plaques to add interest, including Brunel’s “Three Bridges” where road, rail and canal are all one above the other.
This route does well to avoid roads - other than Leighton Road/Elthorne Park Road (which can be entertaining at times as it’s used as a cut through in both directions, but it’s too narrow if people don’t give way).
Benches here and there to stop for a rest on the way.
The Fox pub is popular and just a stone’s throw from the canal (and listed in current Good Beer Guide). The Forester pub is on the walk too. As is The Questors Grapevine bar – very good value and also in GBG (limited opening hours).
I did this on a wet January day and some parts can be a little muddy, but nothing that your boots will sink into.
