Hiking Historian
11 May 2025A good rural route between a large seaside town and a small hamlet, using tracks and unpaved roads, which unfortunately makes it foot-only.
From the centre of Southport, with its abundance of choice for transport, shopping and refreshments, we take well-paved roads into the suburbs, with a unique lawnmower museum if anyone wants a distraction! As we move through the commercial snd residential streets on the outskirts of the seaside resort, we eventually join a footpath at the end of a cul-de-sac. The footpath is tarmac, and runs past horse paddocks, until we cross a little footbridge and follow the path through the trees to the end (Dobbies is just to the right if you need a break or toilet stop).
At the end of the footpath, we join the pavement at the new housing estate, which ends when we pass over a brook. From here, the often busy rural road is now unpaved, but we leave it at the next farmtrack: a long straight, often muddy, path through the massivw, flat fields.
At the end, we join an unpaved road, but there is a well-marked pedestrian zone on the side of the road, which we follow until our next junction, yet another farmtrack. Running alongside a ditch between fields of crops and sheep. The road ahead is unpaved but quiet, and there's some interesting WW2 remains dotted about.
Another path across fields brings us to another road, but we turn right and then left onto another farmtrack, around two little ponds. A short unpaved road, then a path alongside the old railway, and soon we're in the small village of Haskayne, where, once we're through, we take a small path by a playing field to the towpath of the Leeds And Liverpool Canal and so eventually come to the Scarisbrick Arms, and the end of the route, with its nearby bus stops.
A good rural route through otherwise flat and uninteresting fields, but away from the busier roads.
