Description

This route re-locates a gate and path into their correct location (a minor shift of about 30m) and redirects the path to avoid a millpond (the pond is shown on the expanded Slowways map - path going through it! - but not on the explorer OS for some reason). Otherwise it’s the same route

28 Dec 2022 (edited 10 Apr 2023) Winter

This walk is probably fine in the summer, but is not manageable in the winter due to flooding. I walked from Ilchester in December and the first problem was the route under the A303. The river level was too high and the path was completely submerged. There is another crossing south of here which uses a footbridge to go over the road, and this is fine all year round.
Unfortunately I could not find a route across King's Moor that wasn't flooded. I tried numerous options until I ran out of daylight. I may try again, in which case I will upload the route.
My advice for this route is do not attempt it in winter or after heavy rain unless you can take a kayak with you. You can use this link to check water levels before walking in this area - https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/location?location=Somerset+
Update - I tried the route again April 2023 and made it all the way. There are a couple of fields where there is no visible path, one had crops the other long grass (knee height), so without a map or GPS it would be difficult to find your way.
There is a section of road walking that doesn't have a path, but the road was fairly quiet when I went, so I felt safe enough. Decent route when it's not underwater!.

This is a pleasant easy and level route, and very similar.to Somilc one, but with a slight deviation following the country lane into Knole, (avoiding having to swim across the millpond which doesn’t show on OS Explorer!) and a more accurate tracking of the path across the field just before Knole. The middle half of the route is very pretty and quiet before the rumble of the main A303 kicks in as you get nearer to Ilminster.
