Strider
15 Mar 2023I walked from Slough to Gerrards Cross.
From Slough Station the B416 takes you past shops and suburban housing, its a busy road and the pavement becomes narrower and closer to the traffic as you go out of the town. after 2km the route turns left through a narrow gate and along a narrow path. More paths across quiet farmland and the busy road is soon forgotten. Through fields with cows and along some narrow, quiet country lanes. A road with pavement takes you close to shops in Stoke Poges. Stoke Common is a lovely nature reserve, with a Scandinavian feel, its boggy either side of the path and puddles on the path make boots necessary. More rural paths past derelict buildings and across farm land and under the M40 to Bulstrode Park. The path is across grassland with grazing horses and cows. There's a sign saying 'Exercising dogs is strictly prohibited. A slight hill up along a suburban street to Gerrards Cross Common which takes you to towards the town centre.
Stiles, narrow paths, two broken gates, mud and some quite deep puddles deny access for wheels. Despite a very dry February and March (so far) there was still mud and standing water on many paths. The Road into/out of Slough is unpleasant but there are so many good parts to make up for it, and it is well worth a walk. Lots to see and lots of variety.

08 Aug 2022I walked this from Gerrards Cross to Slough on a warm summer morning, except for the section out of Gerrards Cross, which I walked on the same day but coming back from Iver (avoiding the busy road section in Gerrards Cross from Sloger one). I've adjusted my narrative for the combined routes to give a better overview.
Out of Gerrards Cross you pass along its high street before crossing into the "common", which was very dry. Down a hill with posh houses you end up on some wide open fields. Not very green at the time of my walk. After crossing Windsor Road you pass by some sheep, before going up a hill through a forested area and coming into Stoke Common with good paths. You'll have to walk a little section along a road, which wasn't too busy, before joining smaller lanes and across more fields.
At the end of that, you need to cross a busy road, followed by a fairly long slog along a busy road with a narrow path right next to a big wall, to get you into Slough.
The route is fairly nice, but the along-the-road-walking is less good. I can't really see an alternative though. I'd give this 3½ stars (if I could).
