Description
This new route avoids a couple of obstacles nearer Cross Hills. One of these obstacles is a temporary footpath closure across the railway line at Cononley and the other (also at Cononley) is a couple of fields which, like a lot of the Aire Valley at this point, floods badly in winter. My proposal is to continue along the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool canal until you reach Farnhill/ Kildwick. You leave the canal at this point and follow the road down and under the canal through Kildwick until you reach the main A629 road. At this point there is a purpose built footpath under the road, suitable for wheelchairs. You then continue up Station Road into Cross Hills and the finish.
I wanted the start of the route in Skipton to change because to get from the bus station to the canal towpath you have to climb a set of 13 steps either side. I couldn't decide on a suitable alternative of the many that there are. Of the 2 options, 1 extends the route by about a kilometre and the other accesses a locally known path through the carpark of Skipton General Hospital. I'm not certain of the status of this path and so didn't want to recommend it. So for now I've kept the Skipton section as it is.
I'm happy to submit a new version, altering the start, if you feel this might be useful

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Nov 2023The route follows the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath, which is level and generally in a good condition. Once out of Skipton, the countryside is pleasant, but the traffic noise from the main road can be so loud as to make conversation difficult. After passing the village of Bradley Hamblethorp Bridge is reached, which has a memorial to WW2 Polish aircrew worth viewing. The route continues to the village of Kildwick, where I would suggest a slight variation from the published route, to avoid a stretch of road with no footpath. Instead of crossing the swing bridge, continue along the towpath until the next bridge, then turn right alongside the grounds of Kildwick church, right again at the Parish Rooms, currently a highly recommended cafe, to join the road, then follow the route as published
(Please note that the footpath alongside the railway line in Cononley mentioned as being closed in the route description is open).
