Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

06 Aug 2024A good combination of urban and rural footpaths. Despite lots of good paths, the paths through the fields make it foot-only.
From Skelmersdale Concourse, with its shops and transport links, we take the footbridge over the main road and join the tarmac footpath heading south. Under a couple of subways, we follow a paved road through Tawd Bridge. Another subway, and we follow paved walkways through the closely-packed houses, passing a shop and under a jetty to the road. Across the road, a tarmac footpath into some trees, and a subway under the motorway bring us into Pimbo.
Despite the hum of factories and the nearby road, the pavement run through trees and a massive grass verge, so it's easy to forget we're walking through an industrial estate. At the end, we turn onto an unpaved road which becomes a farm track. Continuing across a level crossing, at the next junction we turn right along the edge of the field (don't follow the path into and through the trees; it's a dead-end passing an woodland playground). It can be a bit overgrown and wet, but we soon hit the road.
Almost straight away, we join another farm track, which becomes a footpath running through a field of corn. Another road to cross, and another footpath across a field, before heading into and through woods. At the end, it becomes a farm track running past Billinge Hall.
A short stretch of unpaved road and we're onto another footpath across a field. Eventually we come to a footbridge*, and a path running alongside trees until we follow it around the farm at the end. Onto an unpaved, but dead-end, road, we pass a few old houses and farms. From the next junction, paved roads to the centre of Billinge, with its shops and transport links.
A good walk through some nice countryside, and even the urban paths are good!
* at time of survey, the footbridge was out, but is being replaced. Ditch isn't too hard to negotiate without it.
