Description
Instead of using the riverside path from Altham Bridge to Padiham, this route used the Padiham Greenway cycle track and is therefore shorter. Unfortunately the cycle track is temporarily closed where it crosses the River Calder next to Padiham Memorial Park. When/if this is reopened, an improved version of the route can be uploaded, but for now this detour through streets is necessary

23 Jan 2023After leaving the main road from Simonstone, the track descended through fields with lovely views ahead. It passed through the former railway line and over boardwalk to reach the River Calder. There was evidence that the river floods here at times, but maybe not enough to block the route. I saw a little egret along here. There was a stone staircase up to the road. It was a bit tedious following the road between housing and industry, but only for half a mile.
The Padiham Greenway was surprisingly pleasant and felt quite rural. It was a shame the track was closed at the bridge over the river because this would be the most direct route. My route diverted past the bandstand and down to the river, but the path seemed to disappear and the obvious route was back up steps to pass the church on the main road. It was a pleasant diversion, and I stuck to quieter streets past some rather lovely old housing before reaching the town hall.
