Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

On the day I walked this - after a period of heavy rain. There were issues with flooding. These had been indicated by reviewer 2. The issues were between Lower Hayne and Ellerhayes Bridge. The whole of this section was completely flooded, and so deep it was not possible to pass. I used the road section here, and will be posting a wet weather alternative showing the route I took in sillott(two). If walking from Ottery to Silverton the flooding can be seen from the road - and so the road option to Silverton can be chosen at this point. However if starting from Silverton you have to walk down to the bottom of Hayne Lane, before you see the flooding, so you would have to retrace your steps back to the road at Silverton if it cannot be crossed. This needs considering beforehand, should you decide to walk it after a period of sustained rain. That said I have walked this path several times at various times of year and have not had an issue.
I agree with the points made by both previous reviewers. I got around the issue of the M5 crossing by using the road bridge at Lower Budlake, by using a byway onto the B3181 which has a pavement linking with the route at Budlake farm.I
I enjoyed the route despite the issues. It is safe and easy to navigate.

I walked this route from Ottery to Silverton on a sunny June day. Very pleasant. The only issue is the crossing of the M5. I could not find the crossing shown but was able to cross the bridge just to the north after walking through a farm yard. After crossing the bridge over the motorway then continue straight on uphill on a track. This then becomes a permissive path which rejoins the route just to the north west of Lower Budlake. Silverton is a pretty village with plenty of amenities. Picture shows a good place for a break, just as you come into Clyst St Lawrence from the south.

I enjoyed this route which I walked from OSM to Silverton as part of a circle, on to Cullompton and back to OSM. Sadly I did it on a very very wet day after previous heavy rain, which resulted in some difficulties after Killerton - the riverside footpath along the Culm, over the railway to Punsland Cross was entirely underwater - I was basically upto my upper thighs in water (and I'm quite tall!) using my poles to find the bridges across ditches that were hidden in the flood. Slow going! There is also an issue at Budlake where the mapping is not quite right - the permissive pass runs along the M5 for a while and over the farm bridge - the crossing indicated on the route does not exist. However it was easy to find and pleasant. Unfortunately the footpaths around Clyst St Lawrence/Aunk are not well maintained, which is not the fault of the route-finder and is a long-standing problem - take a stick to bash down undergrowth and prepare for wet feet. Otherwise, it was on farmland footpaths and lightly used lanes and generally a very nice route. One to do in drier weather!.
